Kenyan socialite and content creator Risper Faith has sparked conversation online after sharing details of her experience giving birth in the United States, highlighting some of the expenses that can come with having a baby abroad.

In a video shared with her followers, Risper spoke about the different stages of childbirth, including prenatal care, hospital requirements and the costs incurred after delivery. Her account has drawn attention to the financial realities that can easily be overlooked when people focus on the perceived advantages of giving birth in the US.

Risper said the decision involved significant financial planning but maintained that she viewed the sacrifice as an investment in her child’s future.

The cost begins before delivery

According to Risper, expectant mothers travelling to the US should prepare financially well before delivery because expenses begin during pregnancy. She explained that prenatal visits, medical documentation and other requirements can add to the overall cost.

She also noted that women who have been attending prenatal appointments should carry their medical records when going to the hospital, as these documents help healthcare providers understand the pregnancy history and previous care.

Her comments highlight how the cost of giving birth abroad goes beyond the delivery itself, with medical care accumulated throughout pregnancy potentially becoming a significant expense.

Hospital bills can quickly add up

Risper also shared figures from her hospital experience, giving followers a glimpse into the separate costs associated with the mother and baby.

She explained that the baby’s hospital bill alone came to about $3,464, while the mother’s bill was approximately $7,077 for the period she discussed. Combined, she said the figures translated to a substantial amount in Kenyan shillings.

The expenses demonstrate why childbirth in the US can be considerably costly, particularly for families paying significant portions of medical expenses out of pocket. Reports on Risper’s experience have similarly highlighted the high cost associated with her delivery.

Why she believes the sacrifice is worth it

Despite the financial burden, Risper presented the decision from the perspective of her child’s future. She pointed to the opportunities and privileges she believes come with the child being born and registered in the US.

In a short statement, she said, “Mimi nili sacrifice sababu gani? Watoto wako na future.”

Her comments have since fuelled debate among Kenyans over whether the long-term benefits associated with giving birth abroad justify the immediate financial sacrifice.

For some parents, the decision is driven by perceived opportunities for their children, while others question whether the cost of overseas medical care is financially sustainable.

Risper’s experience has therefore opened a wider conversation about the expenses families should consider before choosing to have a child abroad.
