Nicki Minaj opens up about faith, fame and why she stopped going to church
By Katemarthason Okudo, June 17, 2026Award-winning rapper Nicki Minaj has opened up about her spiritual journey, reflecting on how fame changed her relationship with church and the challenges that came with maintaining her faith while navigating life in the spotlight.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the rapper revealed that although she grew up actively attending church, the demands of her rapidly growing music career gradually made it difficult for her to continue with the routine she once knew.
According to Minaj, church was a significant part of her upbringing. She regularly attended services several times a week and considered it an important aspect of her life before her career began to take off.

How success changed her routine
The rapper explained that her absence from church was not a deliberate decision but rather a consequence of the lifestyle that came with her growing success in the entertainment industry. As her music career expanded, weekends that were once reserved for worship became occupied with performances, studio sessions and other professional commitments.
“Once my career started taking off, first of all, I stopped going to church,” Minaj explained. “Not because I wanted to. I still wanted to go, but all of a sudden I was working on Friday nights and Saturday nights,”she said.
She noted that before entering the entertainment industry full-time, attending church on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays had been part of her normal routine.
Life after moving to California
Minaj also reflected on the period after relocating to California, saying she never found herself settling into a church community the way she had before. While her career continued to flourish, she admitted that reconnecting with regular church attendance became increasingly difficult as her public profile grew.

The rapper suggested that fame brought challenges she had not anticipated, particularly when it came to practising her faith in spaces that were once private and personal.
The challenge of worshipping in public
One of the greatest difficulties, according to Minaj, was losing the sense of privacy that many people experience during worship. She described her relationship with God as deeply personal and said that becoming a globally recognised celebrity changed how she experienced church environments.
“When you go to church, you want to feel like it’s just you and God,” she said.
Minaj explained that public attention often made it difficult to focus entirely on worship because people were constantly aware of her presence.
“What happens when you become famous is people stare at you. It takes away that feeling of just you and God and makes you feel like you’re on display,” she stated.
Faith remains important
Despite the changes that came with fame, Nicki Minaj’s comments suggest that faith continues to play an important role in her life. While her relationship with church attendance may have evolved over the years, she indicated that her spiritual connection remains something she values deeply.
Her reflections offer a glimpse into a side of celebrity life that is rarely discussed, showing how success can sometimes affect even the most personal aspects of a person’s life, including their faith and worship experience.
