Nameless recalls breaking into tears after father’s death despite rarely showing emotion
By Steve Ireri, September 2, 2026Kenyan musician David Mathenge, popularly known as Nameless, has opened up about the last time he shed tears, revealing that the death of his father moved him to cry despite being someone who seldom shows emotion through tears.
Nameless made the revelation in a quick-fire session with Kalondu Musyimi on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, where he also reflected on his personal life, family, friendships, career, education and everyday life.
The veteran musician admitted that crying does not come easily to him, making his recollection of the moment particularly personal.
“I struggle with crying, but I cried last year when I lost my dad,” Nameless said.
Nameless was also asked about the last time he lied, with the musician admitting that it could have happened on the very morning of the interview.
“The last time I lied, I think it was in the morning. Maybe someone asked me something, and I told them I am doing well and maybe I am not doing well,” he said.
The musician also admitted that he could not remember his most recent Google search, explaining that he had not used the search engine in quite some time.
“My last Google search was- I honestly cannot remember. I have not done a Google search in a while. I do not remember for real,” Nameless said.
Away from the more personal revelations, the celebrated musician also opened up about the people closest to him, revealing that he has several friends and would not want to single out one person as his best friend.
“I have many and I will not start giving names,” he said.
However, Nameless went on to mention fellow musicians Mr Lenny and Bien among his close friends from the entertainment industry, while noting that he also maintains friendships outside showbiz.
“From the industry, people like Mr Lenny, Bien, those are my good friends and I also have friends outside of the industry,” he said.
When asked about the person he communicates with most, Nameless had a straightforward answer: his wife, Wahu.
“Wahu, my wife, is the person I call the most. Wahu is also the person I text the most,” he said.
The admission offered another glimpse into the bond between the couple, who have remained one of Kenya’s most prominent celebrity couples throughout their long relationship.
Nameless also revealed some of his preferences away from music, naming ugali, meat and sukuma wiki served with tomato sauce as his favourite meal.
“My favourite meal is ugali, meat and sukuma wiki with tomato sauce,” he said.
His least favourite meal, however, is hard githeri, while his strongest kitchen skill appears to be a simple one.
“My least favourite meal is hard githeri,” Nameless said, adding that “the meal I cook best is mayai.”
The musician also reflected on his beginnings before fame, revealing that his first job was at a factory in Industrial Area that dealt with metals.
“My first job, I was working in Industrial Area at a factory line that dealt with metals,” he said.
Nameless recalled earning Ksh4,700 per month at the time, an amount he remembers as significant during his early working years.
“I used to earn Ksh4,700 per month, and it was a lot,” he said.
His journey also took him back to his school days, with Nameless revealing that Science was his favourite subject while Kiswahili was the subject he liked least.
“My favourite subject was Science and least favourite one was Kiswahili,” he said.
The musician further disclosed that he scored an A- in his KCSE examinations, adding another detail to the story of his journey before he established himself as one of Kenya’s most recognisable musicians.
“KCSE, I had an A-,” Nameless said.
