Mosiria calls for arrest of pedestrians ignoring footbridges on busy roads

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Customer Engagement and Citizen Service Geoffrey Mosiria has called for strict action against pedestrians who ignore designated footbridges, saying their behaviour puts both their lives and motorists at risk.

In a post shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Mosiria condemned what he termed as reckless and dangerous conduct after a near-miss incident involving a pedestrian crossing a busy highway instead of using a nearby footbridge.

He said he was forced to stop his vehicle to avoid hitting the pedestrian, describing the situation as avoidable and dangerous.

“This is pure impunity, ignorance, and shameful behaviour, especially from an educated woman who chose to cross the highway instead of using the footbridge, which was only about 20 meters away,” he said.

Near-miss incident

Mosiria noted that the incident happened near a footbridge along a busy road in Nairobi, where pedestrians are expected to use designated crossing points due to high-speed traffic.

He warned that such actions expose pedestrians to serious danger and also force motorists into sudden and risky braking situations.

“What if a speeding vehicle had hit her while attempting to cross? Vehicles on this highway travel at very high speeds. I was forced to stop my car, putting my own life at risk as well as the lives of other motorists,” he added.

Call for arrests

The county official went on to call on police to take action against pedestrians who deliberately ignore footbridges, suggesting enforcement through plainclothes officers.

He argued that such behaviour should not be treated lightly, saying it contributes to unnecessary road dangers.

“I call upon the police to deploy plainclothes officers to arrest these careless pedestrians who deliberately ignore designated footbridges and endanger both their own lives and the lives of motorists,” he said.

He added that such actions should be treated as serious offences due to the risks involved.

Public responsibility

Mosiria also urged residents to follow traffic rules and use designated crossings, saying public safety depends on shared responsibility between motorists and pedestrians.

He stressed that awareness and discipline were key in preventing avoidable accidents on busy roads.

“This dangerous behaviour must come to an end before it ends in tragedy,” he said.
