Mkamburi Chigogo questions domestic workers who expect help from their bosses

Radio host Mkamburi Chigogo has questioned domestic workers who expect some household duties to be reduced when their employers are on leave.

On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, she shared her views after coming across a discussion by domestic managers about their experiences at work.

Mkamburi explained that she found the conversation interesting because some workers were speaking about the challenges they face in different homes. She said she initially thought the discussion would focus on cases where workers are mistreated by employers.

“There is a group of domestic managers ambao wana page yao. Kukatokea issue moja pale, one of the ladies akasema kufanya hii kazi ya domestic manager inataka moyo. Kwa sababu kuna madharau ingine mtu anafanyiwa , ukiangalia kwa undani unasema tu mwenyezi mungu niondoe,” Mkamburi said.

She explained that after listening to the discussion, she became interested in learning more about the experiences being shared. According to her, she wanted to understand whether domestic workers were facing difficult treatment in some homes.

“Sasa mimi nikawa interested, nikasema jamani watu wanatesa watoto wetu huku Kenya,” Mkamburi explained.

Duties in the workplace

Mkamburi said she later heard some domestic managers discussing situations where employers are on leave. She noted that some workers felt it was unfair to continue carrying out certain duties while their bosses were not working.

“Kuna wale walikua wanasema boss yuko leave, lakini bado inspite of you being on leave, you still expect me as your house manager, niamke asubuhi nikupikie mayai,” Mkamburi said.

She questioned that line of thinking and argued that domestic workers are hired to perform specific responsibilities in the home. She explained that being on leave does not necessarily remove the need for those services.

“Lakini sasa mimi najiuliza, kusema ukweli, mkitaka kusema ni roho chafu, it is okay. Then why did I hire you?” Mkamburi said.

The content creator maintained that employers hire domestic workers for a reason and that the arrangement is based on agreed-upon duties. She said she struggles to understand why some tasks would become an issue simply because an employer is away from work.

“Umeajiriwa kwa ajili gani,” Mkamburi asked.

She continued by saying that if she is expected to wake up and prepare her own breakfast, then she would question the purpose of hiring help in the first place.

“Nikisema naweza amka nijipikie breakfast, umuhimu wako hapo basi ni gani?” Mkamburi added.
