Gachagua opens up about receiving fully paid VIP treatment in the US
By Paulette Mboga, September 6, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says he and his wife, Reverend Dorcas Rigathi, are receiving special treatment during their visit to the US, saying they have been welcomed with kindness and made to feel at home.
Gachagua said the two are grateful for the welcome they have received and that they are having a wonderful time. He explained that Rev Dorcas had even asked whether they could stay in the US a little longer because of how they were being treated.
“Whenever I visit the US, Kenyans there treat me very well. I don’t spend any money, I stay in a big house and I’m driven around in the latest Range Rover. I tell them not to come back to Kenya permanently: they should only visit and return to the US. We need the dollars, Gachagua stated.
“We are so grateful, Dorcas and I, for the love that has been bestowed on us. We are really having a wonderful time. Rev Dorcas was asking whether we can stay a bit longer,” Gachagua said on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
Gachagua said they were being treated like young children and noted that such kindness was something they were not used to. He compared the treatment to what he said they were accustomed to experiencing at home, saying the difference had been noticeable.
“We are being treated like young children. People are so nice to us; you know we are not used to it. We are used to being beaten by goons,” Gachagua said.
Enjoying the welcome
Gachagua also thanked the women who hosted his wife the previous night, saying Rev Dorcas returned home very happy. He jokingly asked the women to share what they had done so that he could also do the same for his wife.
“I want to say thank you to the ladies who hosted my wife last night; she came home very happy. I don’t know what you did to her. If you could just whisper what you did to her so that I can do it for her,” Gachagua said.
He also thanked the men who hosted him for nyama, saying they had a good time and that the experience made them feel at home. Gachagua said their visit was expected to involve engagements during their six days in the US.
“For the men who hosted me for nyama, thank you; we had a nice time, and we are feeling at home. We are here for 6 days, and we look forward to a good engagement,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also spoke about meeting Kenyans who had moved to the US in search of better opportunities. He said leaving one’s country and settling elsewhere is not an easy decision.
“I am very happy when I meet Kenyans who are here for greener pastures. It is not easy to leave your country and settle elsewhere,” Gachagua said.
