Comedian Eddie Butita joked that he was taking a break from football after Egypt lost 3-2 to defending champions Argentina in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

Butita, who was supporting Egypt, shared a light-hearted message after the dramatic comeback, saying he needed time away from the sport following the result.

Argentina came from two goals down to book their place in the quarter-finals after a thrilling match. Egypt had looked set for a famous victory before the defending champions turned the game around to win 3-2.

Butita shared a short statement after the match, making it clear he was stepping away from football, although his post was made in a joking manner.

“I officially take a break from football to focus on personal matters. I kindly ask for privacy during this time,” Butita said.

The match turned dramatically

Egypt made a strong start to the game and took the lead in the 15th minute. The move started from a short corner before Marwan Ateya delivered the ball into the box, where Yasser Ibrahim rose above Lisandro Martinez and headed home.

Argentina had a chance to level the score in the 21st minute after being awarded a penalty. Lionel Messi stepped up to take the spot kick, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly and made the save to keep his side in front.

Egypt thought they had doubled their lead again in the second half after Mostafa Zico found the net. However, the goal was ruled out following a foul on Lisandro Martinez during the build-up.

Only moments later, Egypt attacked again after Argentina failed to make use of a corner. Mohamed Salah led the counterattack before finding Hassan Hassan, whose cut-back was finished by Zico to give Egypt a second goal.

Despite trailing by two goals, Argentina fought back and completed a remarkable comeback to win the match 3-2. The victory sent the defending champions into the World Cup quarter-finals, while Egypt’s tournament came to an end.

His post came shortly after the final whistle as Argentina celebrated another comeback victory, while Egypt bowed out of the competition after letting a two-goal advantage slip away. Butita’s message reflected the emotions of the match in a humorous way as he joked about taking a break from football.
