Butita claims politician offered him Ksh100M for endorsement
By Valerian Khakayi, September 1, 2026Stand-up comedian and filmmaker Eddie Butita claims a politician has approached him with an offer of Ksh100 million to endorse and praise them ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Butita made the claim on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, while addressing his fans, saying he had been approached by an unnamed politician who wanted him to use his influence to promote and endorse them.
“Kuna politician ameniapproach anataka kunipatia Ksh 100 million nimuendorse na nimsifu,” Butita claimed.
The comedian, however, said he was not interested in accepting the offer, arguing that doing so would make him lose the respect of his fans.
Fundraising appeal
Butita went on to jokingly ask his followers to raise the same amount of money so that he could turn down the politician’s offer.
“Na mimi sitaki kuwakasirisha na sitaki kupoteza respect yenu na sitaki kuwa sellout, saa nilikuwa na suggest mnichangie hiyo Ksh 100 million ndio nisichukuwe hiyo ya politician, nichangieni juu sitaki kupoteza respect yenu,” he said.
He even proposed setting up a Paybill number through which his followers could contribute the money.
“Nitakuwa na issue paybill mnichangie Ksh 100 million, inaweza kuwa vizuri mkifanya hivyo in two weeks juu yeye alikuwa atoe next week so nyinyi mko na atleast two weeks,” he added.
Politicians courting public figures
Butita’s claim comes as politicians are expected to increasingly court celebrities, comedians, musicians, influencers and other public figures as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
With public figures commanding large audiences on social media, political players could seek their support to reach younger voters and shape public opinion ahead of the campaign season.
Endorsements from popular personalities can also give politicians access to audiences they may struggle to reach through traditional political rallies and advertising.
However, Butita did not identify the politician he claims approached him, nor did he provide evidence to independently verify the Ksh100 million offer.
