Babu Owino reveals details of Eric Omondi’s arrest and detention
By Ascah Mwango, June 5, 2026Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has spoken out following the arrest of comedian Eric Omondi.
In a statement shared via his X account on Friday, June 5, 2026, the MP said he met Omondi at the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters after the comedian was arrested earlier in the day.
According to Babu, Omondi was picked up at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at around 12.15 pm and later taken into custody, where he remained detained as efforts to secure his release on bail were unsuccessful.
“We are with @ericomondi_ at Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters. Eric was arrested today at JKIA at 12.15PM. The charges pressed against him are frivolous, fickle, limping and vexatious. The DCI officers have refused to admit him to bail. Let’s meet in Court on Monday and come prepared,” Babu Owino stated.

Omondi’s arrest
This comes hours after Omondi revealed he had been detained by a squad of mystery men in a grey Subaru.
Taking to his official social media platforms on Friday, June 5, 2026, the prominent independent candidate for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat triggered widespread alarm with a desperate, frantic post uploaded directly from the back of an unmarked vehicle.
Omondi claimed he was suddenly ambushed, cornered, and detained by a heavily coordinated team of eight men operating a vehicle long associated with clandestine state security operations.
The bone-chilling message, which immediately went viral across East Africa, offered a rare, terrifying glimpse into what appeared to be an active, high-profile apprehension.
“Just been arrested by a group of 8 men in grey Subaru. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” a panicked Omondi sounded the alarm to his millions of followers.
The brevity and sheer urgency of the post left fans, human rights lawyers, and political supporters scrambling for information, as the comedian’s phone lines went completely dead shortly thereafter.
The shocking detention comes less than 72 hours after Omondi captured national attention by taking to the pulpit as a praise and worship leader.
Earlier this week, the activist had warned that Kenya was facing unprecedented, overwhelming systemic crises that could only be solved through divine intervention.
“Kenya needs a lot of Prayers. There is a lot going on,” Omondi had cautioned on Tuesday, while heavily promoting a massive national prayer crusade alongside world-renowned Nigerian televangelist Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.
Critics and political commentators are already speculating whether his sudden, aggressive transition into deep religious and socio-political mobilization has ruffled feathers within influential government circles.
In Kenya, the mention of an unmarked “grey Subaru” carries an ominous weight, frequently synonymous with swift, extrajudicial crackdowns by elite, plainclothes intelligence units tasked with neutralising perceived threats to state stability.
Omondi is no stranger to police custody, having racked up numerous high-profile arrests over the last few years for leading daring anti-government demonstrations – ranging from pulling handcarts loaded with 3 million unemployment CVs to State House, to marching outside Parliament on horseback.
However, the nature of this particular multi-man intercept has raised significant red flags due to the lack of official police branding and the completely unknown destination of the captive.
As anxiety builds across Nairobi, pressure is mounting on internal security organs to disclose Omondi’s current whereabouts and clarify whether the self-proclaimed “President of the People” is legally booked in a police station, or if he has truly vanished into the system.
