A reformed Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has admitted using drugs with zeal.

In an exclusive interview with a local TV station on Sunday, February 22, 2026, the lawmaker, now a reformed man, said he stopped those habits back in 2020.

“I used to consume bhang, drugs, and alcohol, but I stopped their consumption on 17th January 2020. It has been six years since I touched bhang, drugs, or alcohol, six years, and I just drink water; it is in the public domain,” Babu Owino stated.

Criticism and public focus

Babu Owino addressed criticism from political colleagues, particularly John Mbadi, urging him to focus on national duties.

“John Mbadi should focus on building the nation; he should focus on working at the Treasury. Focusing on Babu taking bhang while he is focusing on selling Safaricom, there are pending bills he should be focusing on. He is lucky he has choppers; he is moving around and fueling them,” he said.

He also spoke about his public approval and ranking among Luo leaders.

“About this ranking of Luo leaders, I was proclaimed by the people. I was ranked at 58% and Mbadi at 2%, that is what is disturbing him, Mbadi boy,” he remarked.

Presidential ambitions

The MP reflected on his political ambitions and questioned why he could not aspire to the presidency. “Uhuru was a president, Kibaki, Moi were presidents, Ruto is a president. Why can’t Babu be a president? What is it that I don’t have?” Babu Owino asked.

The lawmaker emphasized his transformation and continued commitment to public service while addressing personal history.

His candid remarks aim to highlight both accountability and political confidence as he positions himself for future leadership roles within Kenya’s political landscape.

Babu Owino’s confession, coupled with his focus on reform and political vision, underscores the intersection of personal redemption and public responsibility in contemporary Kenyan politics.
