Two arrested as police intercept lorry carrying 31 donkeys in Machakos

Police officers from Kanyonyoo in Machakos County have intercepted a lorry transporting 31 donkeys.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident through a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

“On Sunday, a multi-agency team operating in Kanyonyo intercepted a lorry which was transporting 31 donkeys,” part of the NPS statement reads.

Two persons of interest were held during the operation and handed over to security teams for further interrogation.

Livestock transferred to Ijara

Authorities reported that both the donkeys and the two individuals were later transferred to a multi-agency team based in Ijara for follow-up.

“The livestock and the individuals were handed over to a multi-agency team in Ijara,” the NPS noted.

The donkeys are currently being detained at Masalani Police Station.

According to the statement, the animals will remain in custody until the rightful owners come forward for identification and formal handover.

“Preliminary investigations established that the donkeys had been stolen earlier from Garsweino Location in Fafi Sub-County,” the NPS further indicated, while stressing that inquiries remain ongoing.

NPS praises multi-agency cooperation

The NPS praised the collaboration between the different agencies that made the interception possible.

“National Police Service commends the vigilance of the multi-agency teams involved in this operation and reaffirms its commitment to serving and protecting the public,” the statement added.

Officials also urged the public to remain vigilant and continue working with law enforcement to curb crimes involving livestock, which remain a challenge in various parts of the country.

The police said such joint operations demonstrate the growing strength of coordinated security responses across different regions.

The NPS concluded by assuring Kenyans of its determination to continue protecting lives, property and livelihoods.

At the time of reporting, the two persons of interest were still being held at Masalani Police Station, awaiting further legal processing, while the donkeys remained under police care.
