Police have confiscated more than 335 kilograms of bhang in two different operations conducted in Machakos and Isiolo counties.

During the raids, one person was apprehended, and a vehicle linked to the illicit trade was also seized.

In a statement shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), on Thursday, October 24, 2024, the first operation took place in Athi River South sub-county, Machakos County, where a tip-off from a concerned member of the public led police to a building under construction in the Kwa Mang’eli area.

Officers said they discovered eight gunny bags containing 115 kilograms of cannabis after searching. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately Ksh3.45 million. A security guard who was stationed at the building was also arrested at the scene.

The police are now actively searching for the owner of the house, identified as Susan Muya, who is believed to be involved in the trafficking operation.

“In Athi River South sub-county within Machakos County, a tip-off from a member of the public led to the recovery of 8 gunny bags containing 115kg of cannabis at a building under construction at Kwa Mang’eli area. Alongside the seizure estimated at Sh 3,450,000 in street value, a guard deployed at the site was arrested as police hunt for the owner of the house identified as Susan Muya,” DCI stated.

In a separate incident, authorities intercepted a Nissan Xtrail vehicle along the Isiolo-Modogoshe highway in Garbatulla. The officers flagged down the vehicle, but the driver attempted to flee, leading to a high-speed chase.

The car was eventually immobilized half a kilometre away from the initial checkpoint. However, the two occupants managed to escape on foot, leaving the vehicle behind. Inside, officers found 44 bales of cannabis, each weighing 5 kilograms. The street value of the drugs is estimated at Ksh6 million.

“In the second incident, a multi-agency team based at Kinna VCP within Garbatulla intercepted a Nissan Xtrail Reg No. KBQ 199X following an intelligence report that the vehicle was ferrying narcotics along the Isiolo-Modogoshe highway.”

All evidence from both operations has been processed and preserved as authorities continue to intensify their efforts to combat drug use and trafficking across the country.
