Four police officers suspected of breaking in and stealing from a stationary motor vehicle have been detained pending completion of investigations.

The four, together with two other civilians, appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo on Monday, June 10, 2024.

According to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Onsarigo allowed an application by the prosecution seeking to have the six suspects detained.

14 days request denied

However, Onsarigo declined to grant the 14 days sought by the prosecution.

“Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo has today allowed an application by the prosecution seeking to have to have four police officers and two other people suspected of breaking in and stealing from a stationary motor vehicle detained pending completion of investigations,” ODPP said in a statement.

The four police officers will be detained for four days at Kayole police station, while their two accomplices will be detained at Ruai police station until Friday, June 14, 2024, when their case will be mentioned.

Prosecution’s argument

The prosecution while seeking their detention stated that the four suspects are police officers and are likely to interfere with witnesses and the investigation process.

According to the ODPP, the four police officers possess special skills that can be used to tamper with the witnesses, while the residence of the other two suspects’ is unknown.

“While arguing their application, the Prosecution stated that the four suspects are police officers and are likely to interfere with witnesses and the investigation process, thanks to the special skills they possess and that the other two suspects’ place of abode is unknown hence pose a flight risk,” the ODPP said in a statement issued on Monday, June 10, 2024.

The six suspects have been charged with stealing from a locked motor vehicle, handling stolen property and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The suspects were arrested last week on Thursday.

The complainant Peter Owino made a complaint to Kayole police station that his motor vehicle was broken into and money stolen.

Ksh2.2 million stolen

They are believed to have trailed the accountant of Rophine International School from a bank in Utawala last week before breaking into his car and disappearing with Ksh2.2 million.

The police officers in the incident hold various ranks in the service.

One of the officers is a police sergeant, another one is a corporal and a constable from Kasarani police station. The other one is a police constable from Ruai police station.

The suspects will be produced in court on Friday to confirm the progress of the investigation.
