Police on Friday recovered 148 kgs of bhang worth Ksh4.2 million along the Kisii-Isebania Road.

Confirming the latest, Kisii County Commander Isaac Kiwele noted that the bhang was being ferried to Kisii, and the recovery followed a dramatic chase between officers and the driver of the vehicle.

Police intercepted the driver around the central area and arrested him.

A search was conducted in the vehicle and the officers recovered the bhang stashed in four bags. He is currently in police custody pending arraignment.

Commander Kiwele also noted that the arrest followed a tip-off from concerned members of the public.

“The vehicle was heading to Kisii, our officers swung into action and intercepted the motor vehicle around the central area, they managed to arrest one occupant who was the driver and recovered 4 bags of bhang weighing 148 kilograms at a street value of 4.29 million, the accused is in custody pending arraignment in court,” County Commander Isaac Kiwele told the press.

The latest comes a week after six persons of interest were apprehended by detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) over possession of bhang worth Ksh5.1 billion.

In a statement, detectives noted that the bhang weighing 170 kilograms was recovered from two operations.

The first operation involved crew members of a bus plying the Moyale-Isiolo Highway en route Nairobi.

Detectives intercepted the bus arresting four persons of interest and recovering 16.7 kilograms of bhang weighing 16.7 kilograms.

“As the fight against use and trafficking of narcotics by anti-drug agents continues, over 170kg of Marijuana estimated at Sh5.1 million have been seized in two separate operations in Merti and Buruburu areas.

“In the incident at Merti along the Moyale – Isiolo highway, four crew members of a KDH 166M Scania bus were arrested, after 16.7kg of bhang was found concealed within the bus that was destined for Nairobi,” DCI said in a statement.

The second incident involved two persons of interest who were cornered in Nairobi’s Buruburu Estate.

They managed to escape but were later traced to Athi River where they were arrested.

“In Buruburu area of Kamukunji, the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit detectives intercepted a Toyota Probox with over 155kg of the illicit herb, after a hot chase from Ngong.

“The two occupants – Samson Zimbwakale, 27, and Phesto Sigungu, 46 – managed to jump out of the vehicle and made a lucky escape to Athi River in Machakos County, but were later flushed out of their hideout at Cedar Court and taken to custody at Muthaiga Police Station,” DCI added.
