One-term chants erupt at Milimani Law Courts
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 18, 2025Naivasha Member of Parliament (MP) Jayne Kihara’s supporters started chanting a one-term slogan in an open court at the Milimani Law Courts.
The chants erupted inside one of the courts on Friday, July 18, 2025, as her supporters waited for her arraignment after she was arrested on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
During that time, her lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, also addressed the supporters.
He told them that the new Constitution allows citizens to express themselves freely, a right that they must protect.
Lawyer Njiru also accused the current regime of arresting and frustrating opposition political leaders.
He said that citizens are being arrested and charged for chanting “one-term”, which he termed unconstitutional.
“He came to us and we accepted him. No one stopped him from speaking. Why is he arresting us in opposition when we talk, and why arrest someone because of saying one term?” Lawyer Njiru asked Kihara’s supporters.
One of the supporters responded back with a question, “Na si mambo ni one-term?”
Lawyer Njiru then paused and asked the question – “Eti mambo ni?” – and they responded, “One-term,” repeatedly.
The controversial lawyer then reminded MP Kihara’s supporters that they were in court, asking them if they were not afraid of being arrested for chanting the one-term slogan in the courtroom.
The crowd continued responding with the “one-term” slogan, and one of them was heard saying that they should release the MP and arrest them: “Watoe mheshimiwa, watushike sisi.”
The city lawyer then proceeded with his address to the group in court, stating that they should keep reminding President William Ruto that he has arrested youths and charged them with terrorism.
He further stated that those who have not been charged with terrorism have been buried, accusing the Head of State of their deaths.
Meanwhile, the lawyer urged the President to step aside from office for what he referred to as a failure to manage the youth.
According to lawyer Njiru, the President has failed to fulfil what he promised citizens, and he resorted to asking the crowd, “Ndio mnasema one-term? Eti mnasemaje?” The crowd responded, “One-term.”
MP Kihara was brought to Milimani Law Courts early morning in a green Subaru, before being whisked away and later returned to Milimani after her lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, tweeted that his client had been taken to an unknown location.
