One nabbed with 160 brooms of bhang in Kisii

Police in Kisii County have arrested one person of interest after recovering a large consignment of bhang during a targeted operation in Nyankongo Village.

In a statement on Monday, September 15, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the joint operation was conducted by officers from Nyanchwa Police Station and DCI officers from Kitutu Central Sub-County, following intelligence reports on drug trafficking activities in the area.

According to police, a search at the suspect’s house led to the recovery of 160 grams of suspected cannabis sativa packed in two large bags.

“After a thorough search, the officers recovered 160 brooms of suspected Cannabis sativa packed in two large bags, along with loose dry leaves in one other large bag,” the statement read in part.

The person of interest, believed to be the owner of the house, was taken into custody and is awaiting arraignment in court. 

Further, the NPS reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on narcotics and urged members of the public to continue sharing information that can help in the fight against drug abuse and related crimes.

Kiambu County

This came weeks after police in Kiambu arrested a 29-year-old man found in possession of 60 rolls of cannabis during a weekend operation.

According to a report from Rweno Police Station in Kiambaa Sub-County, officers conducted the operation on the evening of Saturday, August 30, 2025, in the Gacharage area. 

In a statement on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the person of interest was apprehended at the scene, and the narcotics were confiscated as evidence.

“The narcotics were confiscated as evidence, and the suspect remains in custody pending his arraignment in court. The operation is part of the National Police Service’s ongoing efforts to combat the sale and distribution of dangerous drugs within the county,” the statement read in part.

Kakamega County

Elsewhere, police impounded a motorcycle transporting 25 kilograms of bhang in Kakamega as officers intensify the fight against illegal drugs.

In a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday, August 28, 2025, officers explained that the incident happened on Wednesday along a road in Matungu, Kakamega.

When the motorcyclist approached the checkpoint, he was ordered to stop but defied the directive. He instead attempted to speed past the officers, running over a spike barrier in the process. The motorcycle’s front tyre was punctured, forcing the rider to halt a short distance from the roadblock.

Sensing imminent arrest, the individual abandoned the motorcycle together with the consignment of cannabis sativa and fled on foot. Police recovered the motorcycle and the 25 kilograms of bhang, which were taken into custody as exhibits.

A manhunt was launched to track down the fugitive, with authorities vowing to intensify crackdowns on drug trafficking networks across Kakamega and other parts of the country.
