Mother kills 9-year-old, injures son in shocking Bomet assault case

Police in Konoin Sub-County of Bomet have apprehended a person of interest in connection with the assault of two children at Taboino village in Cheptalal location.

According to the police report, a nine-year-old girl succumbed to injuries sustained after the assault, while her 13-year-old brother remains hospitalised.

The person of interest was apprehended after the girl died on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Longisa Hospital.

“It was reported by Johnston Koech, Chief of Kitala location, that he received information today that on the night of 04/11/2025 at around 20:00 hrs, a person of interest assaulted her two children at Taboino village in Cheptalal location, Konoin Sub-County.

“She then took the two already assaulted and injured children to Longisa Hospital, where one child died while undergoing treatment,” part of the report reads.

The person of interest is said to have taken her 13-year-old son to Longisa Hospital on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, where he was admitted with a swollen face and bruises on his body.

He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The second child was taken on the following day, November 6, 2025, in serious condition with visible injuries on the forehead and blood oozing from her nose, but she succumbed to her injuries the following morning.

Police report

“Joan Chepkoech, k/f/j, aged 9 yrs, was taken to the same hospital by the same person of interest in serious condition with visible injuries on the forehead and blood oozing from her nose, admitted but succumbed to the injuries,” police said in the report.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the person of interest used a wooden stick to assault them and failed to report the matter at the police station.

Instead, she went into hiding in the Longisa area and took the victims to the hospital.

Officers from Cheptalal Police Station and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Konoin responded immediately to the hospital to establish the facts.

The child’s body was transferred to the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death, while the other child is under medication at the same hospital.

The person of interest has since been apprehended as investigations continue.
