Four more bodies have been retrieved from an abandoned quarry in Kware area which is adjacent to Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in Embakasi South, Nairobi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officials, homicide team and Recce squad are currently leading the operation of retrieving the bodies on the second day, with the help of locals.
Bodies recovered in quarry
Human rights groups on Friday, July 12, 2024, stated that over 9 bodies had been recovered.
However, police in their report indicated that only six bodies had been retrieved as of Friday evening.
Human rights activist Hussein Khalid who is in Kware, Mukuru slums to assist in the recovery of the bodies, says they have so far recovered four bodies.
Number of bodies soar
This brings the police tally to 10, while the human rights activists’ tally jumps to 14.
According to Khalid, the number of bodies retrieved is set to soar as local divers have stated that there are more in the pit.
“Presently in Mukuru kwa Njenga assisting with the recovery of bodies. So far four have been retrieved. Local divers are saying there are more in the pit. Sad sad scenes,” Khalid said.

DCI director Mohamed Amin in a statement issued on Friday, July 12, 2024, confirmed that homicide detectives were analysing samples from the scene to positively identify the bodies.

DCI report indicated that all the bodies were female which were in different stages of decomposition. It added that the bodies were wrapped in nylon papers and reinforced with nylon ropes.
The bodies retrieved on Friday were transferred to the City Mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.
Demand for govt accountability
Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has since called for President William Ruto’s regime to reveal the circumstances surrounding the mutilated bodies.
Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has also joined other Kenyans in demanding accountability following the retrieval of the mutilated bodies.
In a statement on Saturday, July 13, 2024, the former Prime Minister insisted that the perpetrators of the heinous act must be brought to book.
