Jeff Mwathi’s body went down 59 minutes after DJ Fatxo left his house – Inspector Bett

Chief Inspector Timothy Bett, who is also a CCTV expert and a key witness in the ongoing inquest of the late Jeff Mwathi, has tendered his evidence in court.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Officer Bett presented several pieces of footage that captured the deceased and his friends on the morning he was found dead.

According to the footage, the late Jeff Mwathi, Mugithi artist Lawrence Njuguna, alias DJ Fatxo, and three ladies are seen arriving at the lift area on the ground floor on February 22, 2023, at 3:32:41 am.

The five who are seen conversing and in high spirits as they waited entered the lift at 3:33:02 am to the 10th floor, where Fatxo’s house was.

During the presentation it emerged that DJ Fatxo and the three ladies later left the 10th floor, where the DJ’s house was, at 4:48:21 am, as captured by the CCTV cameras.

The court was then shown footage that captured the car the four used at 5:02am as they drove out of the apartment compound.

According to the evidence tabled in court, the deceased is seen going down at around 59 minutes, or one hour, after the DJ and the three ladies had left the 10th floor before checking out of the compound.

“The camera at the parking area captured someone falling down on the ground floor at 05:47:18,” Inspector Bett told the court.

The court was shown in slow motion where the deceased was seen falling with his hands and limbs stretched out as the body descended, which the officer described as a “split-second fall”.

Notably, one of the CCTV footages shows DJ Fatxo at 9:05 am, walking while on his phone towards the crime scene where Jeff’s body was lying even though the place had been covered with cartons.

However, the Mugithi artist did not move near the body but stood far away and later left the scene after a few minutes.

During cross-examination, the victim’s family lawyer, Danstan Omari, asked the officer to tell the court if, from what is seen in the footage, the DJ’s calmness was of a person who had seen a friend’s body lying down.

“This man is said to have fallen from his house naturally; how should he react to seeing his friend’s body? Is this person’s conduct showing the conduct of someone he knows?” Lawyer Omari asked Officer Bett.

In his response Inspector Bet stated that “from physical demeanour he did not react.”

On his part, lawyer Okatch maintained that his client, DJ Fatxo, did not return to the apartment after he had left earlier before the deceased, his friend, went down.

Inspector Bett stated that according to the footage, he was not captured until 9:05 am, when he is seen approaching where Jeff’s body was lying.

However, it emerged that the CCTV time was a bit different from the real time of the events, but the expert told the court that he cannot exactly explain how the difference came about.

The inquest proceeds on January 29, 2026.
