Residents of Ngoe Village in Kandara, Murang’a County, were left in shock after the body of an unidentified man with a severed right hand was found floating in River Ruchu on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

According to witnesses, the body was discovered around noon by a passerby from Ngoe Village who was heading to Kahiga Village, about 200 metres away, and noticed it floating near the riverbank.

Alarmed, he alerted nearby residents, who then gathered at the scene before contacting local authorities.

The incident has sent shock waves through the sleepy village, with residents suspecting the man may have been killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the river.

Confirming the incident on the phone, Mung’aria Location Chief Patrick Gikonyo said that after a report was made to him, he notified officers from Kandara Police Station, who immediately drove to the scene to assess the situation.

“It was after the body was turned by the officers that we established it had the missing part,” the chief said.

He added that police, assisted by locals, combed the river and the surrounding thickets in search of the missing forearm, but their efforts did not bear fruit.

The administrator added that it is possible the body, which had already started to decompose, was dumped at that very point, as the river is not so swollen that it could have swept the body of the deceased from upstream.

The deceased, who had no shoes on, is believed to be between 30 and 40 years old. Police moved the body to the General Kago Mortuary in Thika. Chief Gikonyo urged families with missing relatives to visit the facility for identification.
