Police launch investigations as 26-year-old man is fatally run over by matatu after alighting while in motion

Police have launched investigations following a tragic incident that saw a 26-year-old man lose his life after being run over by a matatu.

According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the accident happened along Muthurwa Road on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The DCI in a statement shared on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, says the deceased identified as Samuel Ndungu, had alighted from the moving matatu Reg. No. KCK 040Q operating under Forward Sacco, when he fell onto the hard surface of the road.

Ran over by rear wheels

According to the report filed at the Makadara Police Station, the rear wheels of the vehicle ran over him, causing fatal injuries.

“Traffic police in Makadara are looking into an unfortunate case where a 26-year-old man was yesterday ran over by a matatu after alighting while the vehicle was in motion, suffering fatal injuries. The incident that occurred at 8am along Muthurwa Road involved a Mistubishi FH belonging to Forward Sacco registration number KCK 040Q and the deceased passenger, Samuel Ndungu,” the DCI’s statement reads in part.

Ndung’u was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The DCI further expressed deep sadness over the loss of Ndung’u, and extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The public was further urged to always exercise patience while boarding and alighting from the public service vehicles.

DCI appeal

The DCI appealed to Kenyans to be only alighting or boarding PSV vehicles when they are stationary, and from safe picking and drop-off points.

“With sadness on the loss of such a youthful soul and many others that have gone down the same way, the DCI appeals to our dear citizens using public transport means to always exercise patience while boarding and alighting from matatus, doing so only when the vehicles are stationary and at safe picking and drop-off points,” the DCI statement reads.

The DCI has also urged drivers and touts to be mindful of and patient with their customers, by allowing them enough time to safely board and alight at designated points to avoid such accidents.

This is, however, not the first incident to have been witnessed on Kenyan roads.

In March 2023, a man identified as Nahashon Ng’ang’a died after he was said to have been thrown out of a moving matatu along the Ruiru bypass following a disagreement with a tout over bus fare.

On June 13, 2018, a female student lost her life along Thika Superhighway at Queen of Apostle Church, after she was also said to have been pushed out of a moving matatu.
