Wode Maya, a prominent Ghanaian YouTuber, and his wife, Kenyan content creator Miss Trudy, have announced a major life change, revealing they are leaving Ghana and relocating to Kenya.
The news came through a YouTube video uploaded by Miss Trudy on Sunday, September 29, 2024, titled “We Are Relocating From Ghana to Kenya!”
In the video, Miss Trudy, whose real name is Gertrude Awino Njeri, shared her excitement about returning to her homeland after spending several years in West Africa.
“Finally, we have moved to Kenya. Home sweet home, this is our new home. Goodbye Ghana, hello Kenya,” she said.
Her husband, Wode Maya, echoed her sentiments, stating, “Goodbye Ghana.”
Divorce rumours
Their move comes in the wake of swirling rumours regarding their marriage.
Speculation about a possible divorce emerged following an interview Miss Trudy gave to a Ghanaian content creator, where she candidly discussed some of the challenges in their relationship.
The interview raised eyebrows when Miss Trudy acknowledged that their busy schedules and frequent travels left them with little time together.
Miss Trudy also opened up about her struggles with mental health since relocating to Ghana, noting that adjusting to a new country has been difficult.
She admitted to feeling lonely and depressed, exacerbated by cultural differences and the absence of close friends.
Till death do us apart
Addressing the divorce rumours, Miss Trudy made it clear that she has no intention of ending her marriage with Wode Maya.
She expressed her desire to grow old with him and refuted claims that she forced him into marriage.
“God forbid! I don’t want to get divorced. When I was getting into marriage, I knew I wanted to be there until the end. I want to grow old with Maya. I’m not trying to look anywhere else,” she stated in a video.
She also dispelled claims that she had pressured Wode Maya into marrying her.
“I never forced Maya to marry me. It was a mutual agreement,” she said, refuting the allegations.
Though she acknowledged feeling unhappy at times, Miss Trudy made it clear that these struggles were not a result of her relationship with Wode Maya.
In fact, she praised her husband for his unwavering support, describing him as her best friend.
“When I say I am unhappy, it doesn’t mean Maya is the cause of my unhappiness. Maya is my best friend, my bae,” she said, adding that she wouldn’t be where she is today without him.
She also took the opportunity to defend her husband from the criticism he has faced online.
“He has the biggest heart. He’s a good person. Just stop attacking him. When I see him sad, it makes me emotional. I just want to correct the wrongs I might have done unintentionally,” she said, urging her followers to apologize to Wode Maya for their harsh judgments.
Bright future
The couple, who married on September 10, 2022, in a traditional ceremony, have long been a fixture in the African content creation scene.
Wode Maya, whose real name is Berthold Kobby Winkler, is celebrated for his YouTube channel, which showcases the diverse cultures, entrepreneurship, and untold stories of Africa.
His mission has been to shift global perceptions of Africa, often focusing on the continent’s beauty and innovations rather than the poverty and challenges typically highlighted in Western media.
Wode Maya’s content includes travel vlogs, interviews, and lifestyle videos, and his channel has become a platform for highlighting local entrepreneurs and artisans across the continent.
As he and Miss Trudy begin their new chapter in Kenya, they are expected to continue creating content aimed at changing the narrative about Africa.
For Miss Trudy, returning to Kenya marks a new beginning. After grappling with the challenges of adjusting to life in Ghana, she expressed relief and happiness at being back in familiar surroundings.
With their move to Kenya, the couple hopes to leave behind the rumours and continue sharing their lives and work with their millions of followers around the world.
