Kenyan musician Kagwe Mungai and popular content creator Sharon Mwangi have announced the end of their relationship.
The couple, who have been together for close to two years, expressed their gratitude to their fans for their support throughout their journey.
“You’ve been a part of our journey, and for that, we’re incredibly grateful,” the statement began. “We want to be transparent with you all even though sharing this publicly feels a little cringe. We know how easily facts can be misconstrued, so know that anything you hear or read elsewhere is likely fiction or assumptions,” the statement read in part.
The couple explained that their decision to separate was amicable, made with love and mutual respect.
“The truth is, we’ve decided to lovingly separate as a couple. Our journey together has been extraordinary, filled with deep love and affection. The love we have for each other remains, but it’s taking a beautiful new shape, a chance for each of us to blossom on our own paths,” they wrote.
Adding;
“There’s no negativity here. Think of it as two best friends recognizing it’s time for individual space to pursue our most fulfilling lives.”
Kagwe and Sharon also made it clear that they would not be discussing the matter further and requested privacy.
“We won’t be engaging in further discussions on this and we deeply appreciate your understanding and respect for our privacy,” they stated.
“Thank you to everyone who supported, prayed, and rooted for us. With love, Sharon & Kagwe.”
Sharon and Kagwe Mungai
The couple went public in May 2023.
In November 2023, Sharon opened up about the repercussions of making her relationship with Kagwe Mungai public during an episode of her podcast, Best Kept Secrets.
Sharon admitted that she initially had reservations about going public with their relationship. She sought advice from her close friend Joan, who reassured her that the situation wasn’t as daunting as she feared.
After discussing it with Kagwe, they established clear boundaries before taking the plunge.
“We had many discussions because I was anxious,” Sharon said. “We weren’t hiding anything, but I talked to Joan, and she told me it wasn’t as scary as I thought. So, we set our boundaries.”
The decisive moment came when Kagwe expressed his desire to share a video of them in an elevator. Though hesitant at first, Sharon agreed. They didn’t anticipate the overwhelming response.
“He said he wanted to post the video of us in the elevator. I asked if he was sure, and he said yes. We hadn’t even considered the number of views. The video spread across blogs and other platforms, and it got around half a million views. After that, I started getting congratulatory messages from my family,” Sharon shared.
However, the attention also brought an unexpected burden. Sharon felt overwhelmed by the sudden societal pressure to get married, a pressure she had not experienced before.
“I had never been congratulated like that before. It brought a lot of pressure about getting married,” she admitted.
