Media personality and advocate Janet Mbugua has called on Africans to embrace peace, unity, and empathy, urging the continent to stand with countries facing conflict and political struggles.

In a powerful reflection shared on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Mbugua said the words of Kenya’s National Anthem have been weighing heavily on her mind.

“May we dwell in unity, peace and liberty – those words of the Kenya National Anthem have been challenging me a lot over the last few days. How do we get there, not just as a country but as a continent?” she said.

Her message comes amid rising tension in several African nations, including Sudan, Congo, Kenya, and Tanzania, where citizens continue to demand change, peace, and justice.

‘We keep our empathy’

Mbugua urged Africans to continue showing compassion and understanding, saying empathy remains key in the fight for justice and unity.

“We keep our empathy. In fact, we create room to have even more of it. We lean in to the spectrum of activism, which does not look the same for everyone,” she said.

She added that activism comes in different forms and that every effort, big or small, contributes to positive change. Mbugua encouraged Africans not to lose sight of the shared goal of peace and development.

“We keep holding space for the countries that truly haven’t had peace (Sudan, Congo), and we continue to hold space for those birthing their revolution like Kenya and Tanzania,” she said.

Her remarks appear to reflect the current challenges facing parts of the continent — from Sudan’s devastating civil war and political unrest in Congo, to social and economic tensions in Kenya and Tanzania.

Mbugua further stressed that development and stability cannot be achieved without unity and active demand for change.

“In order for us to move towards a developed country, move towards better access to health, education, rights, safety, everything that we truly deserve. The more people demand that, the more people push for that, the more you have the leaders of this country saying, over my dead body,” she said.
