Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo reckons that he is successful in life even though he didn’t perform well when he sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

Madowo, who currently works as a CNN Africa correspondent, took stock of his foreign trips in 2023 as he reflected on his KCSE grade.

The celebrated journalist noted that last year he traveled to 27 countries across the globe with his foreign trips totalling 45.

Madowo additionally revealed that he scored a mean grade of B- when he sat for KCSE, adding that he was pushed to repeat form four because of his ‘bad’ grade.

I “failed” KCSE but I did 45 foreign trips last year – 27 countries. My B- in the national exam was so bad I was getting pushed to repeat Form 4! Mtu asikupimie hewa,” Larry Madowo wrote in a post on social media.

Larry Madowo joins a list of celebrities who have publicly made their KCSE grades known even though they didn’t perform well.

KCSE results

Madowo’s remarks about his grade came hours after Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu released the results of the 2023 KCSE.

Speaking at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret on Monday, January 8, 2024, Machogu said that 899,453 candidates sat for the 2023 KCSE exams.

He added that Kenya achieved gender parity at the secondary education level, with 50.09% male and 49.91% female candidates sitting for the 2023 KCSE exams.

The Education CS said that 201,133 candidates who sat for the 2023 KCSE attained a minimum university entry grade of C+.

He also stated that a total of 526,222 candidates scored a mean grade of D+ and above.

However, Machogu regretted that a large number of candidates 48,174 scored a mean grade of E.
