Comedian Mitch narrates how sacrificing his job for a girlfriend ended in heartbreak

Stand-up comedian Mitch Makwaka, alias Comedian Mitch, has revealed that he once quit his job to dedicate himself fully to a relationship, only for it to end in tears after the girlfriend cheated on him.

Speaking during an interview with Oga Obinna on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Mitch said that he was never fired from his job but chose to walk away because of his girlfriend, whom he had met while on campus.

He recalled that they had been a picture-perfect couple during their university years, often admired for their bond, but their love story soon took a different turn.

“The truth is, I left that job on my own. I was not fired. It was that girl who made me quit. She was a Kamba, and you should be careful with them. Putting the jokes aside, what actually happened is that we met on campus, and we were a very adorable campus couple,” he said.

According to Mitch, the relationship began to crumble when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

He said that the difficult season exposed the cracks, as he discovered through his girlfriend’s best friend that she was cheating on him.

The revelation hit him hard because he had never experienced betrayal of that kind before, describing the heartbreak as instant and devastating.

Mitch added that he cried for seven months as he tried to process the pain.

“When COVID came, life became very hard. That is when I discovered the painful truth that she was cheating on me. It hurt me deeply because I had never experienced cheating before; I had never known what that feels like. The heartbreak was instant, and I found out about it through her best friend,” he said.

He went on to reveal that the heartbreak coincided with another personal battle, as he had also contracted Covid-19 at the time.

Mitch admitted that he kept the illness to himself, not even informing his mother. In the middle of the struggle, he attended a burial in the village and returned to Nairobi only to find that his girlfriend was no longer communicating with him.

“At that time, I was already suffering because I had contracted Covid-19, and not even my mother knew about it. Later, I travelled to the village for a burial, and when I came back to Nairobi, she was not talking to me. For almost a month, she ignored my calls and refused to speak to me.”

Reflecting on the experience, Mitch noted that heartbreak often makes people remember aspects they never noticed before, even something as simple as the tribe of the person involved.

He added that during the relationship, he had been blinded by love, never once thinking of such differences, but after the heartbreak, those details became clear in hindsight.

“But you see, when someone is heartbroken, that is when they remember the tribe of the person who hurt them. If you are not heartbroken, you never even think about someone’s tribe. Many people are like that. When you are dating, you hardly know or care about your partner’s tribe,” he added.

Despite the pain, Mitch laced his narration with humour, remarking that in today’s world, women often have the ability to choose and even financially sustain the men they want, making the dating landscape even more unpredictable.

“Eventually, I met her friend, and she came to my place to sober up. That is when she opened up and told me the truth.”
