Rise of Gody Tennor

Born Godfrey Masambu, he has risen to prominence as one of the leading figures of Arbantone, a style that fuses Gengetone, classic Jamaican riddims, and Nairobi street swagger.

He first gained attention with his breakthrough single “TikToker,” which went viral on TikTok and crossed 10 million views on YouTube.

Other notable hits include “Mukuchu” and “Nimekumark,” the latter featuring socialite Huddah Monroe in its video.

Tennor began his musical journey during his school days, recording a gospel song while in Form One. Despite his gospel roots, he has deliberately avoided romantic themes in his music. Coming from a deeply religious family, his parents are senior church pastors. Tennor credits their support and prayers for his success.

While Arbantone has faced criticism for heavy sampling, Tennor says he has largely moved toward original sounds, emphasising that the genre is a reflection of Kenyan youth culture. Arbantone is characterised by Sheng-heavy lyrics, nostalgic beats, and high-energy dance rhythms.

Tennor is often cited among the top artists in the genre, alongside names like Tipsy Gee, YBW Smith, Sean MMG, and Lil Maina.
