Amberay: We are the generation that won’t bewitch our nieces and nephews
By Paulette Mboga, September 14, 2025Influencer Amberay has spoken strongly about how her generation of aunties and uncles will treat the young members of their families.
Taking to social media on Sunday, September 14, 2025, she declared that they will not exploit their own nieces and nephews, nor subject them to harmful cultural practices.
In her message, Amberay wrote, “We will be the first generation of aunties and uncles that doesn’t bewitch our own nieces and nephews, a generation that doesn’t ask our own nephews and nieces to come work as maids after high school in the name of helping them! Cheers to us.”
Her statement highlighted a shift from traditions that have long shaped family dynamics in many African households, where relatives often placed young family members in vulnerable positions under the pretence of assistance.
Challenging old traditions
Amberay’s comments point to a generational change in how extended families handle responsibility and opportunity. For years, it was common for young people, particularly girls, to be sent to live with relatives after finishing school, often working as domestic help while being told it was a form of support.

By openly rejecting this practice, Amberay positions her generation as one that values independence, education, and the fair treatment of family members. She framed the move as a collective stand by modern aunties and uncles to protect and uplift their nieces and nephews, rather than exploit them.
Her words also challenge harmful stereotypes about relatives using spiritual or cultural practices against their own kin — a belief that has persisted in some communities.
She insists that her generation will not “bewitch” their nieces and nephews.
Mother’s perspective
Amberay, who is also a mother, has often spoken about the importance of raising children in an environment of love and protection. Her declaration reflects not just her role as a parent but also her wider view on family structures and responsibilities.
As she continues to use her platform to highlight social issues, her message adds to ongoing conversations about breaking cycles of exploitation within families.
Her call, “Cheers to us,” captures a sense of optimism that her generation can redefine what it means to be an aunt or uncle.
