The body of one of the two robbers shot dead by the police in Murang’a a week ago has been identified.

The body of Francis Mulwa Mutila has been lying in the Murang’a county morgue unclaimed as his family had not shown up to identify it.

The deceased’s mother Mary Wanjiru said she became concerned after his son who was working as a chef in one of the hotels in Nairobi failed to come back home for days.

Unlike the family of Joseph Kang’ethe, who learnt of the fate that had befallen their son through the media on the same day, Wanjiru said she has been in the dark about the whereabouts of her son.

It was until someone tipped her about the incident that she was shown the picture of the two suspects being handcuffed before allegedly being executed.

Kang’ethe and Mulwa were shot by the police in Kinyona forest in Kigumo on Sunday, March 12, a day after thugs raided Unaitas Sacco and made away an unknown amount of money.

Police said the two were among the gangsters who raided the bank. The officers said they recovered Ksh1.13 million and two guns believed to have been used in the raid.

The two young men were living within the same locality in Ruiru but the mother did not reveal if she knew that the two were friends.

Wanjiru is now demanding justice for her son, saying the police should have taken her son to court if he had committed any crime instead of executing him as police had earlier circulated photos of the two suspects in handcuffs before they later reported that the two were killed in an exchange of fire with detectives.

“Those who killed my son should be made to face the law because what they did was wrong,” she said.

According to government pathologist Kamotho Watenga who conducted the postmortem on Mulwa’s body, the suspect was shot five times.

Three bullets were lodged in the head, one on the right shoulder and one at the back and the body had no other injuries.

Watenga said the ballistic experts will examine the cartridges recovered to identify the guns used to shoot the suspects.

Officers from the Independent Medical Legal Unit (IMLU) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) were also present during the postmortem.

The family of Kang’ethe got relief after being allowed to transfer the body and carry on with the burial plans.

Body detained in Murang’a

The body had been detained for further examination after the pathologist said he could only see the outlet of six bullets of the nine that the suspect is alleged to have been shot with.

The body was taken for scanning and no traces of bullets were found in the body.

The deceased’s father Francis Kamau had requested to be allowed to move the body to a morgue closer home but he was told to wait until a full autopsy report was filed.
