A middle-aged man from Kuresoi South in Nakuru County shocked court attendees on Tuesday, when he appeared elated after he was sentenced to life in prison for defilement.

Wesley Langat, a resident of Bararget Village, defiled his 6-year-old biological sister on September 21, 2019.

Appearing before Molo Resident Magistrate Emmanuel Soita on Tuesday, September 24, Langat pleaded guilty to repeatedly defiling the minor.

The suspect also pleaded guilty to another count; touching the girl’s private parts indecently.

Magistrate Soita warned Langat that his admission to the offences would result in him being imprisoned for life, but the suspect maintained that he was sure he had committed the offences.

The court was told that Langat’s neighbour spotted the girl walking abnormally while playing with her age-mates on September 21, and upon interrogating her, the minor revealed that her brother had sexually abused her.

The neighbour said she, thereafter, reported the allegations to the police, who arrested the suspect.

Langat was charged and sentenced on the same day – Tuesday, September 24.

He has 14 days to appeal against his sentencing.

Cases of defilement in Kuresoi South and Kuresoi North constituencies have been on the rise, a trajectory that caught the attention of Chief Justice David Maraga, who, in July 2019, directed that a new court building be constructed in Kuresoi South and judges deployed to expedite the hearing of such cases.

The CJ further urged the larger Kuresoi community members to keep watch of each others’ children in a bid to prevent child sexual abuse from thriving.

Chief Magistrate Elena Nderitu, who is the head of Molo Court, said they have received at least 90 defilement cases since the start of 2019.
