A wanted thug was shot dead in a shootout with police at Mlango Kubwa in Mathare, Nairobi, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the armed and dangerous criminal only identified as Vinnie was responsible for a series of robberies in Eastlands.

According to the DCI, the sleuths had laid a trap for Vinnie who was headed for his usual nocturnal adventures on Tuesday night.

He was ordered to stop but defied the directive and reached for his firearm and began shooting indiscriminately at the officers.

“His shots missed our men who had taken cover in a drainage trench, prompting the section commander to return the provocation with lethal accuracy escorting the thug’s soul for judgement with a volley of blaring gunfire, that echoed across the Mathare valley in the dead of the night,” DCI said.

Police said Vinnie had been on their radar for the past few months after violently robbing a local boda boda rider of his motorbike.

“He was also part of an upcoming gang responsible for a series of armed robberies within Pangani, Mathare, Eastleigh and Huruma areas,” DCI added.
