Kenya being one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, it presents lots of opportunities for investment across various sectors not only for foreigners and established tycoons but also for the youth.

With the investment environment presumably favorable and optimistic this year, it is time for Kenyan youth to get out of their comfort zone and go for the investment opportunities available in order to be their own bosses.

It is important to do thorough research on each type of investment idea you have to know their advantages and disadvantages before investing your money.

Below are some of the investment ideas that you can look out for as a Kenyan youth in 2023.

The Stock Exchange market

The Stock Exchange is a marketplace that deals with the exchange of shares of the publicly declared company as well as government, corporate, and other financial instruments.

For you to thrive in this business, it would be best if you did intensive market research before getting into this field.

It is also advisable to go through a licensed broker, investment banker or advisor who already understands the market to help you navigate the sector.

One first needs to identify a company to invest in before buying shares. One should ensure that the company is strong and has a potential of growing when selecting the company to invest in.

Government Bonds

There are numerous ways in which the Kenyan government raises money to fund projects or run the government itself and one of them is through borrowing from the public.

Investing in government bonds is like saving your money to earn you interest after a certain period. Furthermore, government bonds fetch higher interest rates as compared to banks or Saccos, therefore, offering an excellent substitute.

The Treasury bonds offer quarterly, semi-annual, or even annual T-bonds with cash repayment periods ranging from 1 to 30 years. Interest rates vary according to the duration and total amount of bonds issued.

To make it affordable, the government introduced the MKiba bond that can be bought through Mpesa at the comfort of your home with as little as Ksh 3,000 with an annual interest rate of 10%. This presents Kenyan youth with a good opportunity for youth to multiply their money.

Real Estate

Real estate is one of the lucrative sectors to invest in at the moment. Youth can take advantage of the current government’s incentives to developers to make a kill in the sector.

Through the Affordable Housing project, the government is looking to attract developers to invest in affordable housing by offering subsidies on infrastructure costs and tax exemptions.

This provides an excellent opportunity for the youth to become property owners.

Apart from the government, long-term financiers are also developing an interest in the real estate sector as a way of providing dignity and social benefit to the Kenyan people.

Agribusiness

Without a doubt, the agricultural sector will forever be a lucrative investment opportunity. We all need food to survive therefore there will never be a day that farm produce will lack market in Kenya.

From the local market to the towns and cities, fresh farm produce will always sell. You can also export the excess produce to other countries

Starting this business doesn’t need huge capital. If you already have landed in your village, all you need is to plough the land, get some seeds and start planting, remove the weeds, and wait to harvest.

Not having land should not scare you away from farming, you can lease a piece of land most of which goes at an affordable price.

The government has also rolled out a subsidy fertilizer program to incentivize farmers to produce more food. As a youth, it’s time to take advantage of this and invest well in the sector.

Start your own company

When you see these big companies like Safaricom, and Equity Bank you may think that they started big at once.

All these big companies making billions in profits annually once started small and gradually grew to become what they are today. You know they didn’t come out of anywhere and became what they are overnight.

Some individuals started them and expanded with time by providing value to clients.
As a youth, you can start small and strive to provide value for your clients and grow your company with time.

All you need to do is just register your company and make it lively and build a brand.
It is advisable for your company to be about something you are passionate about.

You can also partner with your friends to start a company. As you grow and expand, investors will be presenting themselves to finance your company to reach your desired level.
