Body of a 5-year-old boy retrieved from River Nyando after missing for three days

Police have launched investigations into the drowning of a five-year-old boy in Nyando, Kisumu county.

The juvenile is reported to have gone missing for three days before his body was retrieved from River Nyando by Coast Guard officers.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate the body had no physical injuries.

“Eldana Amani was reported to have gone missing on January 5 by his father and it was suspected that he had drowned. With the help of Kisumu Coast Guard officers the body was found and retrieved three days after he went missing,” the police report read in part.

The body was taken to Ahero Sub-County Hospital awaiting a postmortem.

12-year-old girl drowns

In a second incident, a 12-year-old Sudanese girl drowned after she had gone swimming with her peers.

The minor who was residing at the Kakuma Refugee Camp had gone swimming in a water pan in the camp area.

Police officers visited the scene and the body had already been retrieved from the water.

Boy, 8, drowns

In a third incident, an eight-year boy drowned while swimming with his friends in Runda.

The boy identified as Master Apiyo had gone for a tuition exchange program at the said facility and they decided to jump into the water in the afternoon after the session.

“Apiyo and his friends from Buruburu had gone to Jibi Wata gardens in Runda for a tuition exchange program. They were given an afternoon break and some decided to swim without a pool attendant. The juvenile was found motionless by the other students who informed the owner of the place,” the police report seen by K24 Digital read in part.

Police arrived at the scene when the body had already been retrieved from the pool by a View Hospital attendant who pronounced him dead immediately.

“Police rushed to the scene and the boy had been retrieved from the pool by an attendant of View Hospital who pronounced him dead,” the report added.

The body was taken to Chiromo Mortuary pending an autopsy.

In the last 48 hours, more than five incidences of drowning have been recorded by the police, with minors being a majority.
