One person was killed and several others injured on Wednesday morning after a Modern Coast bus plunged into Nyakomisaro River in Masosa, Kisii county.

The driver of the bus that was travelling from Mombasa is said to have lost control, veered off the road and plunged into the river.

Police said the bus hit a pedestrian when it slid off the tarmac, killing the deceased on the spot.

Several passengers were also injured in the early morning crash and were rushed to various hospitals in the region for emergency treatment.

Kisii Central OCPD Amos Ambasa confirmed the incident, saying they are working to retrieve the bus and see if some people may still be trapped beneath the bus.

The incident comes months after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the operating license of Modern Coast Bus company after one of the firm’s buses was involved in a deadly road accident at Nithi river.

In a statement in July, the road safety agency also ordered a probe into the deadly crash that claimed 35 lives.

The Modern Coast bus heading to Mombasa from Meru fell off the bridge into the river about 40 metres below on July 24.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the 45-capacity vehicle appeared to lose control as the speeding bus hurled down the steep slope on the notorious blackspot.

“A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator’s safety operational standards is currently underway,” Director General George Njau said in a statement on July 25.
