A petition has been filed challenging Jubilee Party’s nomination of retired footballer McDonald Mariga as their candidate in the Kibra Constituency by-election.

In an application filed by Morris Peter Kinyanjui at the Political Parties Tribunal, the petitioner said Jubilee failed to conduct party nominations as required by law and their party’s constitution

Kinyanjui said Mariga’s nomination as the Jubilee Party candidate was illegal and constitutes a violation of his rights.

He said he was invited through a text message for an interview at the Jubilee headquarters, an interview he claims the party used to check the suitability and qualifications of candidates.

Kinyanjui said he sought clarification from Jubilee but was assured that nominations would be held according to the party constitution.

However, Kinyanjui said he was shocked to read, on the same day he was given the assurance, that Jubilee’s National Election Board had declared Mariga as the Jubilee nominee for the Kibra parliamentary race.

Kinyanjui said he lodged an appeal at the National Appeal Tribunal, but it was dismissed.

He claims the Jubilee conducted interviews instead of nominations contrary to the party constitution.

The Kibra by-election is scheduled for November 7, this year.
