Non-binary
Njeri also prefers to be referred to by the pronouns ‘they’ or ‘them’ and not ‘she’ or ‘he’ which defines one’s gender in the heterosexual situation, and this comes after the former BBC journalist revealed she was non-binary in July.
Non-binary or genderqueer is an umbrella term for gender identities that are not solely male or female—identities that are outside the gender binary. [sic]
“I am Non Binary, gender non conforming. I am not He, I am not She I am They/ Them.
“This is Non Binary awareness week and I celebrate me. I took a long time to be comfortable in my identity and how I express myself. I found a lot of comfort through my fashion which liberated me.
“Some education.
“Sex : The biological sex you were born with determined by X and Y chromosomes.
“Gender: Society’s dependent construct that includes norms and roles.
“Gender expression: General behavior of how someone expresses their gender. Through Fashion, body language, appearance.
“All this determine someone’s identity and does not necessarily have to match one’s biological sex.
“Fashion is so important when it comes to different conversations within Non Binary community and has always been a way to communicate. I have never understood why fashion is divided by gender and I believe everyone should wear what they want,” Muriithi wrote on Instagram on July 14, 2022.
