At least five people were seriously injured after a five-man gang descended on residents in Nyali, Mombasa.
Police said the attacks took place to VoK, Leisure, Karama and Kongowea areas suspected members of the Wakali Kwanza gang attacked random passersby.
Several victims who were admitted to the Coast General Hospital with life-threatening machete cuts said the gang members began their attack at Kongowea and Karama areas in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
One of the victims, Vivian Okimu, said she was attacked at Karama shortly after leaving a birthday party.
Another victim, Peter Kiamanthi, 35, said he was going to work when he was attacked by the gang members.
Victims said that the gang, uncharacteristically, did not steal anything from them.
But Coast Regional Police Commander Yakub Rashid said the attack was a normal robbery not linked to the Wakali Kwanza and Wakali Wao criminal gangs.
“We have managed to arrest three of the five suspects who are believed to have carried out the attacks. Police are following crucial leads that will bring to book two more suspects involved in the attack,” said Rashid.
He said one of those arrested was the leader of a gang who has been under their radar. “The suspects were only five and their motive was to rob,” said Rashid
