Leaders backing McDonald Mariga’s candidature in the race for Kibra parliamentary seat were — on Tuesday evening — at pains disclosing which date or month he registered as a voter in Kenya.
The leaders, led by former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir, insisted that Mariga, who has since been ruled out of the Ken Okoth-succession race, is a registered voter in Starehe Constituency.
When tasked to give details when the former Harambee Stars footballer enrolled as a voter in the city constituency, the leaders said they “couldn’t remember, but are sure that it was in 2019”.
Khalwale and Korir say Mariga’s “omission from the voters’ register” was an “administrative mistake” by IEBC.
On Tuesday evening, IEBC Returning Officer in Kibra, Beatrice Muli, said McDonald Mariga, is not a registered voter in Kenya, and, therefore, is not legally fit to vie for an elective seat in Kibra.
Muli made that revelation on Tuesday, September 10, after confirming with the official IEBC voters’ register.
Mariga’s team, led by Khalwale, protested against the declaration, saying they will present their grievance to the IEBC dispute resolution committee.
The Kibra by-election is penciled in for November 7, 2019.
Jubilee Party has seven days, beginning Wednesday, September 11, to file a formal complaint with IEBC. If still the party won’t be satisfied by the IEBC’s dispute resolution committee’s decision, it can, thereafter, go to court.
