Police officers in Siaya are investigating circumstances under which two remandees escaped from custody at Kogelo Police station on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Richard Oliaro Odongo and Boniface Otieno Onyango, who are accused of robbery with violence, had been remanded at the station following the recommendation by the court.

The duo are suspected to have escaped from police custody in unclear circumstances with reports indicating they were never remanded at the station as ordered by the court.

“The two were arrested for the offence of robbery with violence VIDE CR 638/17/2021 & CF E365/2021 and had been remanded at Kogelo Police station on 11/10/2022 by the Principal Magistrate of Siaya Court but they cannot be traced and it is suspected they escaped in unclear circumstances as they were not taken to Kogello Police station as ordered by the court,” the report read in part.

Seven Court orderlies who were on duty on the day when the remandees are suspected to have gone missing cannot explain the whereabouts of the suspects.

One orderly, Constable Oscar Okong’i has since been interdicted pending the outcome of the inquiry even as police continue with the manhunt for fugitives.

The latest comes a few weeks after a juvenile escaped from prison in Nyamira after pouring water on a prison warder.

The guard, Lydiah Khaemba, had temporarily released two juveniles to fetch water to clean the remand cells.

While fetching the water, one of the Juveniles identified as David Manuare poured water on her and escaped through the fence to an unknown destination.

The 17-year-old had been charged with stealing.
