A family in Kitengela has been thrown into mourning after their 10-year-old child died after falling from a four-storey building in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

The grade four pupil is said to have been playing with other kids on the fourth floor of the building before he slipped off sustaining serious injuries.

The boy was rushed to a nearby private medical facility but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A medical officer at the facility said the boy sustained a severe injury on the skull and had lost a lot of blood when he was brought to the facility.

Shocked neighbours milled around the building while calling on National Construction Authority (NCA) to ensure storey buildings adhere to safety standards.

“It is sad to lose such a young boy. This is a tragedy that can befall any parent. We want to urge NCA to ensure that storey buildings meet safety precautions to avert such cases,” Ann Mumbe, an eye witness, said.

Neighbours also urged parents to always take precautions in children playing zones to curb such incidents.

“Society has changed, nowadays an adult can see children playing in danger zones including balconies and playing with electric cables but fear warning them. Some kids are very rude and some parents are violent therefore it is each parent’s responsibility to caution their child on safety measures while playing.

“It is sad and disheartening to lose a child in such an incident,” Peninah Munyiva decried.

The top of the storey building has no grills and tenants use the space to hang their clothes but children frequently use the same as a playground.

Police in Kitengela investigating

The matter was reported at Kitengela Police station and investigations are ongoing.

The body of the deceased was moved to Shallom Community Hospital mortuary in Athi-river pending autopsy.
