Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya has said it will not support the plan by the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to have their members purchase insurance cover for their customers unless their concerns are addressed.
In a statement to newsrooms today, the association Chairman Kevin Mubadi said the sector is already suffering with comprehensive insurance cover that their members have taken.
“The payment of claims delay for almost two years and others do not pay completely because they take advantage of the vulnerable riders,” Mubadi said.
The association stated that they will not comply with the directive if passed by the National Assembly unless the government ensures their claims are paid within one month.
“We wish to invite relevant government body to have a discussion with us and have a better way of achieving mutual benefits,” Mubadi said.
Treasury CS, while reading the 2019/2020 budget in Parliament on Thursday, explained that the move would curb the accidents involving boda bodas that have been witnessed on the roads.
While Rotich acknowledged that boda bodas play an important role in the transport sector, he pointed out that the mode of transport has proven to be risky to passengers and pedestrians.
