By Stephen Karanja in Kiambu County.

A middle-aged man from Kahawa Wendani in Kiambu County died in the wee hours of Friday morning in a fire whose cause remains unknown.

The man, identified only as Fred, had just arrived at his Matopeni home at 2am, when the mysterious fire broke out minutes later.

Fred was returning from watching Kenya vs. Tanzania Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match.

Neighbours say they heard Fred’s screams of pain at 3am, and when they rushed to his house to put out the fire, his wife — who has since been arrested –, wasn’t in the house.

Fred succumbed to his burn wounds, and was taken to a Kiambu County hospital morgue.

Police say investigations into the incident have begun.

Fred’s wife, who is suspected to have lit up the fire, is being held at Ruiru Police Station.
