The Nakuru county government has assured residents of Kikopey, Gilgil of their safety as they (the County Government) find a permanent solution to the floods in the area.

This comes after floods rocked the area leaving businesses counting losses in the wake of blackouts after electricity poles were wiped away by the raging floods.

Nakuru’s Chief Officer for Disaster Management, Ann Njenga, told K24 Digital that Gilgil residents affected by floods will be able to resume work tomorrow(Saturday, September 10.

“The county has been on the ground since morning with the emergency team opening the waterways and unblocking clogged calabashes. The water has started moving and I assure traders that by tomorrow business will resume,” Ann Njenga said.

The floods resulting from residents constructing houses along the waterways and intense storms that produce more run-off than an area can infiltrate and store.

Njenga additionally stated that the national government, through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), has marked areas set for construction of a dual carriage road which will combat such incidences in the future.

“The public participation has just ended, and in October this year, the project is set to kick start will see all those with illegal structures along areas marked for construction of roads evicted,” Njenga said.
