Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri has been elected Deputy Senate Speaker unopposed.
Kathuri’s election follows the withdrawal of Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo’s candidature for the seat.
“Standing order 11 provides that if there is only one candidate who had been duly nominated as deputy speaker, that candidate shall be elected forthwith without any being election being conducted be declared as the deputy speaker,” Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced.
Murungi Kathuri’s previous seat
 Kathuri previously served as the South Imenti Member of Parliament having been elected in the 2017 General Election as an independent candidate.
He was elected as the Meru Senator in the 2022 General Elections after vying on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
