40 Jordanian nationals who were arrested in the streets of Mombasa for begging have been repatriated back to their country.
The tourists who include 19 adults and 21 children with the youngest being 4 months old, were arrested and booked at the central police station in Mombasa on Friday last week for contravening tourist visa regulations.
Mombasa county police commander, Stephen Matu said that investigations conducted revealed that they (foreigners) resorted to begging in search of money to travel to Nairobi after they became broke.
The police boss added that officials drawn from the immigration department alongside detectives from the human trafficking department had interrogated the foreigners and established that they ran out of money a few weeks after they arrived in Mombasa as tourists.
“It’s quite unfortunate that they ran out of funds and we’re unable to sustain their lifestyle as tourists, they resorted to begging for food and money for transport back to Nairobi. Following negotiations with their embassy officials we have agreed to deport them back,” he said
Matu noted that the Jordanians will be travelling to Nairobi on road before catching a flight back to Jordan today, Thursday, September 8, 2022.
“They are being escorted by security agencies alongside immigration officials up to Moi international airport Nairobi, where they will board their flight back to Jordan,” he said
