The National Police Service (NPS) has pleaded with all Kenyans to respect the decision by the Supreme Court to uphold the results of the presidential election announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on August 15.
NPS spokesperson Bruno Isohi Shioso assured Kenyans that police would continue to provide round-the-clock security in a statement issued to the public.
“The Supreme Court of Kenya has today at Milimani Court delivered its judgement on the Presidential Election Petition. This outcome should be respected by all Kenyans. The National Police Service on its part continues to provide round-the-clock security, and further. the acting General of Police assures the public of their personal safety and security of their properties,” NPS said in a statement.
Police further vowed to deal with all incidents of violations of law and order that could arise from parties dissatisfied with the Supreme Court ruling or individuals who are just taking advantage of the situation.
“We, therefore, appeal for calm and cooperation with the police as they discharge their mandate according to laws of the land. Violations of law and order shall not be tolerated at all costs. Let’s all maintain the peace that we all cherish,” the statement by NPS added.
Supreme Court ruling
The Supreme Court of Kenya, on Tuesday, September 5, 2022, upheld William Ruto’s win following a presidential election petition by Raila Odinga.
In a judgement read by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the seven-judge bench unanimously ruled that the August 9 presidential election was conducted in line with the country’s constitution.
Chebukati had, on August 15, 2022, declared that Ruto, the Kenya Kwanza flagbearer won the election with 7,176, 141 votes, which is 50.49% of the total votes cast beating Raila, his Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya rival who garnered 6, 942, 930 votes (48.85%).
