Three people were killed and a dozen others injured in a grisly road accident on Arujo Bridge along Homa Bay – Rongo road on Sunday, August 21.
The accident involving three vehicles, occurred after a Homa Bay town-bound Nissan matatu rolled several times as the driver tried to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming matatu.
Police said two passengers of the ill-fated vehicle died on the spot, while the third victim lost his life while being rushed to hospital.
14 passengers, who sustained injuries in the accident, are receiving treatment at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the three vehicles, two Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and a trailer, were approaching the Arujo black spot when the accident occurred.
“The vehicle which caused the accident was moving towards Homa Bay town from Rodi Kopany township. The driver was trying to overtake the trailer but underestimated the distance of the oncoming matatu and lost control of the vehicle, rolling several times,” an eyewitness said.
Arujo Sub-Location Assistant Chief Jacton Olielo confirmed the incident, further warning motorists, to be cautious when on the road.
“The driver tried to apply emergency brakes to avoid a head-on collision. However, this made him lose control of the vehicle causing the accident,” Olielo said.
The administrator, while referring to recent accidents in the area, advised boda boda operators and motorists to avoid speeding when approaching the bridge.
The bodies of the deceased persons were moved to Homa Bay Referral Hospital pending identification.
