If on the night of August 24, you were in transit or was holed up in a hotel room or lodging, and, as a result, you were not counted in the ongoing census exercise, then you risk not being counted until 2029, this is according to government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna.

Addressing journalists at Teleposta Towers in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 27, Oguna said this group of people, and street families belong to the special population class, who the August 24 counting exercise was specifically allocated to.

Other factions belonging to this category, also known as non-conventional participants, include: people in schools, hospitals, prisons, children’s homes, immigrants, and detainees.

If it so happens that on August 24 one wasn’t counted, and was travelling, was in the streets, was holed up in a commercial accommodation facility, or belongs to any other faction of the special population group, then the only way he or she can be listed is by calling the toll-free number 0800-221-020 and giving his or her details.

The other way they can be counted is when the enumerators visit their homes and find them. This, however, only works for those households which hadn’t been enumerated before.

The government spokesperson did not reveal the consequences of missing out on the listing.

The national population census exercise started on August 24 and ends on August 31.
