The Assumption of Office of the President Committee on Friday, August 12, 2022, held its inaugural meeting at Harambee House. The meeting was chaired by the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua.

Kinyua, who chairs the ad-hoc committee, enumerated the roles of the body and stated that it will be issuing periodical updates as IEBC continues to release presidential results.

“The functions of the committee are to facilitate the handing over the process by the outgoing president to the president-elect and to organize the security of the president-elect. It also coordinates the briefing of the president-elect by relevant public offices and facilitates communication between the outgoing president and the president-elect. It is also tasked with the responsibility of preparing the handing-over programme which includes the swearing-in ceremony,” he said.

Kinyua stated that the body’s mandates will be triggered once IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati formally announces the results of the August 9, 2022, presidential elections and declares a President-elect.

The committee, which was established pursuant to the Assumption Of The Office Of The President Committee Act, is chaired by the Head of Civil Service and includes the Attorney General, Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Chief of Kenya Defence Forces, Director of National Intelligence Services and Chief Registrar of Judiciary.

Others are Eight Permanent Secretaries, Inspector of the National Police Service, Clerk of The National Assembly, and three persons nominated by the President-elect.
