Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has been re-elected for a second term in office.

In poll results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday morning, Barasa garnered 26,861 votes to emerge victorious in the election conducted on Tuesday, August 9.

Barasa’s closest challenger and Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Brian Khaemba came a distant second with 9,497 votes.

Three other candidates including Suleiman Murunga Kasuti, Peter Wanyama Makokha and Erastus Muchimuti Wekesa got less than 500 votes.

Barasa on the run

The controversial MP is said to be on the run after allegedly shooting and killing Khaemba’s aide on Tuesday.

The legislator allegedly shot Brian Olunga on the forehead after a disagreement before going into hiding.

The matter was reported at Kimilili Police Station where Khaemba recorded a statement.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, Khaemba is said to have argued with Barasa at Chebukwabi polling station where he (Khaemba) had gone to witness vote counting.

“Upon entering the said polling station, he met Hon. Didmus Barasa the incumbent MP for Kimilili constituency.

“After about three minutes, Mr. Brian Khaemba decided to leave the station and headed to his car where Hon. Didmus Barasa followed him in the company of four men and ordered them not to allow him (Mr. Brian Khaemba) to leave the place but Mr Khaemba’s driver Joshua Nasokho defied the order and ignited the vehicle,” the report read in part.

According to police in Bungoma, the MP is still at large and his phone is switched off even as the police continue to urge him to surrender to authorities.
